Chris Checkley FCCA

Chris joined Russell New in 1998 and quickly made his mark within the firm's audit department, where colleagues and partners came to rely on his imaginative and efficient attention to any task asked of him.

Chris has undertaken a wide range of demanding assignments over the years including assisting clients with stock market listings (AIM & PLUS) and corporate restructuring. He has a practical approach to each individual project and brings a level of commerciality to the table during these transactions.

In common with all the partners at Russell New, Chris is keen on efficient business and financial management, keeping tax bills and the cost of financial compliance to an absolute minimum. It is to Chris that we all look for a practical solution to a problem.

Sylvia Spencer

Sylvia has been with the firm since 1980, initially working in and then managing the Tax and Company Secretarial departments. She has now been a partner for many years.

A trusted adviser and confidante to many, Sylvia’s extensive experience of general commercial strategy, employment and payroll matters, combined with a natural tendency toward pragmatism can be useful in life's more challenging moments.

Sylvia promotes the ethos that every deal is a big deal to a client, from decisions to change bankers or stockbrokers, right through to decisions to sell multi million pound businesses. She has a fierce dislike of jargon and complex technical language and tries hard not to inflict it unnecessarily! A firm belief that commercial principles should be borne in mind as part of good charity governance makes her a useful sounding board for many of our charity clients.

Vince McLoughlin CTA

Vince joined Russell New in 1995, becoming a partner in 2001. He advises on all aspects of business and corporate tax planning from start up to sale as well as remuneration planning, share schemes, company restructuring and VAT planning for businesses and charities.

Vince aims to deliver sound advice and guidance in a calm and measured fashion to ensure clients are confident with the actions they are taking.

He also tries to add some excitement to the Chancellor’s proposals at our Budget presentations!

Mark Cummins FCCA

A determination to raise the profile of Russell New's activity in the charity and education sector was the driving force behind Mark Cummins' decision to join us in 2003. Mark has continued to develop our already thriving presence in this sector. He particularly enjoys the passion and enthusiasm of the people who work in the sector.

Mark is a well known writer and speaker on matters of financial governance. He feels that the team work ethos of Russell New enables our firm to offer a broad range of services to charity clients with the benefit of the commercial edge which is often forgotten by many other advisers.

His approach is based around understanding our clients and their particular needs which enables us to work with them in achieving their strategic goals.

Aside from heading up our team working in the sector, Mark provides charity training and general governance reviews for many of our charity and education clients.

Mark is a keen marathon runner and over the years has raised in excess of £10,000 for charities.

Alex Thomson CTA

Alex has been associated with the firm in its various guises for many years and during that time has covered the whole range of direct and indirect taxes. He now specialises in personal and trust taxation and maintains close relationships with many clients who seek his advice on every aspect of their financial affairs.

Alex combines accuracy with a desire for minimising the cost of compliance, an aim shared by all at Russell New. He enjoys the challenge posed by complex family taxation involving trusts and personal tax returns.
